“A Stairway to Your Dreams”
Dr. Kevin Polk
You have probably heard about short and long-term goals, and if you haven’t, you get the idea. The long-term goal is sort of like a dream; the short-term goals are the steps you do to get you to the dream. This is where the saying, “One step at a time” comes from.
A nifty thing to do is to make the steps into a simple picture of where you want to go. To do this simply draw a stairway that looks something like this:
Now you put your long-term goal at the top of the stairway and as many short-term goals as you can think of on the “steps” of the stairway. When you start it is a good idea to leave plenty of room between the steps so you can add more short-term goals if you think of them later. One of the best ways is to do this on an erasable marker board (often called “white board”) so you can move the steps around if you need to. Don’t get too concerned with the order of the steps, just try to order them the best you can. Chances are you may end up working on some of the steps out of order or at the same time. (Thank goodness it’s not a real staircase!
When you have it drawn put it in a place where you can see it when you review your daily schedule. Then when you review your schedule you can determine if any thing you did during the day went toward accomplishing one or more of the steps to your long-term goal. At the same time it serves as a reminder to put working on at least one of the steps in tomorrow’s schedule.
This technique only takes a few minutes to try. If you like it, it can really get you working toward your dreams. At the very least you will know one of your dreams and some things you need to do to get there.
Happy Stair Climbing!
