Affiliate Marketing Explained
03/30/2008
Greetings, !
Here's part 4 of my newsletter series on Affiliate Marketing.
Learn, take action, and you'll make the money you want with
affiliate marketing!
There are some myths in affiliate marketing, which attract a lot of
people to it believing they are true. First is they think managing
an online business is easy and second, they think that one can make
a fortune through online marketing in an instant. Probably not even
10% of those who are into affiliate marketing became rich overnight.
There may be some who fortunately achieved overwhelming success in
just a short span of time after setting up an affiliate program,
but not a majority of them can confidently say they only had luck.
Anyone who is successful in this kind of business would say he worked
hard to get to where he is right now. Success in affiliate marketing
takes time and hard work, but it’s worth it.

If you are planning to start an affiliate program, one of the things
you have to consider is having your own website, not just an ordinary
website but a professional looking one. How do you build an affiliate
marketing website? What are the easy steps to build one? First, you
must have already decided on the theme or niche of your website.
It would be better if you already have an idea what products or
services to promote as this would help you plan the design and lay-out
of your web pages. The next thing to do is to choose a domain name
and get it hosted. The domain name is a unique name used to label the
actual address of your website on the Internet. In deciding what
domain name to register, look into the type of products you are
endorsing and the theme of your site. Having the right keywords in
your domain name would give you better chances of drawing more visitors
to your website. Also, choose a top level domain or extension,
such as .com because it is more popular. In selecting your web host,
consider the security of servers and up time guarantees.
Now, you can start creating your webpages. Don’t be disheartened when
you know a little in this field. There are page generation tools and
fast launch sites available online; you just have to search for them.
Countless online sources could help you build an affiliate marketing
website, though you might need time to study and learn the whole process.
This is one of the reasons why your site or the products you are going
to promote must match your interest. Building your marketing website
for the first time would be a lot more fun if you know very well the
theme of your site. If you don’t have time to make your own website,
you can use templates or purchase readily available websites.
The latter, however, is a more expensive option.
Creating an affiliate website on your own would be cheaper and
more interesting. In the process of building your website, you may
also increase your knowledge in Information Technology and the use
of computers, softwares and the Internet. As you educate yourself
in these fields, you are increasing your advantage against other
affiliate marketers. It helps a lot, though, if you already know
the basics in web page development like programming languages and
graphics softwares because you can make your site extra
corporate-looking, more convenient to use or easier to navigate.
Furthermore, if you are knowledgeable and skillful in this area,
you can already concentrate more on the content of the page rather
than the design.

The key to draw visitors to your website is to have high quality
content; thus, the next thing you must pay attention to in building
your marketing website is this. There may be several other factors
that contribute to the success of your affiliate marketing site,
but a good content tops the list. This is precisely the reason
why users choose to enter your site. They want to get information
and so when they don’t find it, they would definitely go elsewhere.
Write interesting articles related to your theme as this would make
them frequent your site. If you have already looked for affiliate
programs that complement your site, add links to the business sites
and other very good informative sites. Links contribute to how well
you will be listed in major search engines as well. Also, create
pages for the products you are endorsing, but don’t just promote
the products by putting hyped-up ads. Keep your readers interested
by injecting lots of relevant and useful information. This would
make them click the link to the business site and buy the product.
Remember that no good content means no frequent visitors,
no sales and ultimately, no commission.
Make your site simple yet not without a touch of class in order to
make it appear more of a business website rather than a personal
website. This would be pleasing to the eyes and more interesting to
browse. To help you with the design, you can check some successful
online stores to get an idea on how you can make your site look
better. Make sure you don’t place too many banner ads since these
could distract some site users; and thus, instead of clicking your ad,
they might just leave your site and look for other interesting websites.
After all, banner ads are not the only means of advertising your
products. Now your website is complete, submit its URL to major
search engines to increase your traffic.
Grow from where you started. Learn about use of keywords for search
engine optimization and apply them in your content.
Update your site regularly or add new webpages. Make sure to inform
your prospects about the latest updates in your site. You can use
newsletters to accomplish this. The Internet offers a huge source
of information about just anything, make use of it. Continue to
educate yourself on how to improve your website and soon you’ll find
yourself successful in affiliate marketing.

Make the Leap to Affiliate Marketing Success

If you are going to become a successful affiliate on the
Internet, you need 3 "intangibles." These are things that must
come from WITHIN you.
===> Intangible 1 <===
First, you must have a strong WHY.
Why must you make affiliate marketing work? What is driving you?
What is it that you CAN'T have in your life anymore and/or what
is it that you absolutely MUST HAVE now?
For me, I couldn't stand working 12+ hours a day anymore and
missing the experience of my children growing up. I also
absolutely HAD TO HAVE the freedom of being able to control my
life and finances through a little box that I could carry with me
anywhere in the world and not be tied to anyone's time pressures
or demands but my own. That was my carrot and my stick. I felt a
great pain deep in my gut of missing out on my children's lives
and the incredible freedom that succeeding in this business would
provide for me. I found my why. You MUST find yours.
===> Intangible 2 <===
You must BELIEVE that it is possible.
If you don't believe that it's POSSIBLE for you to make money
with affiliate programs or make your living on the Internet, you
won't. It's that simple.
For me, figuring out that it was possible was just a matter of
realizing that many other people were ALREADY making great money
online. If they could do it, I could too. It would just be a
matter of figuring out what those people were doing and then
adapting it to my situation.
There is no shortage of undeniable PROOF that people (millions of
them) are making money online with affiliate programs. Just get
online and do some research and you'll find countless
testimonials and stories of REAL PEOPLE making real money on the
Internet. Or head to your local bookstore and you'll find the
same documented evidence of this fact. Truth is, it's getting
easier and easier to make money online with affiliate programs.
I've always said that "affiliate marketing" is the job of the
future. In the "old" days, you had to go to a potential
employer, apply for the position and hope for the best. Now you
can simply go to any company you want, fill out their affiliate
application and start work immediately. Affiliates are the new
working class. Believe me, making money with affiliate programs
or making your living on the Internet is WAY MORE than possible.
It is pretty much (or will be soon enough) unavoidable now.
Affiliate marketing is the "job" of the future that's already
here TODAY.
===> Intangible 3 <===
You must be willing to MAKE THE LEAP.
Ready, FIRE, then aim... This is the operating philosophy you
MUST adopt to succeed with affiliate marketing.
That's backwards for most people who like to aim before they
fire. The fact is the Internet is a moving target... The only
thing constant about it is change. You need to stop analyzing the
game and simply jump into it. You can't learn from the
outside... You have to be IN THE RING to truly understand it.
The lesson here is that you will never really be READY to start
an affiliate marketing business. You simply have to start one.
This is what I call "Making the Leap."
The good news is that the cost of failure on the Internet is very
small. In the "brick and mortar" world you need to evaluate
things very carefully before you decide to open up a business.
It's almost always necessary to invest thousands of dollars to
get an offline business off the ground. However, on the Internet
you can often start a successful business for less than $100. The
Plug-In Profit Site is a great example of this:
http://www.PlugInProfitSite.com/main-19259/freesetup.html
You simply need get IN THE GAME... Each moment that you stay
"out there," you're wasting valuable time that you could be
learning and skills necessary to become a successful affiliate
marketer. In fact, if you're not in the game yet, you're
ALREADY behind the times. Make the leap to becoming a successful
affiliate marketer today!

Offline Promotion Strategies 101
Copyright © Stone Evans, The Home Biz Guy
http://www.PlugInProfitSite.com/main-/ebiz.html
No business can survive the long run without some form of
consistent advertising. As a result, most business owners will
eventually consider using advertising to promote their business.
The toughest part of the advertising equation is in determining
where and how to spend your advertising dollars. If you do it
wrong, you could plunk down your entire advertising budget and
receive absolutely no return on your investment. But, if you do
it right, your advertising could continue to bring a nice return
for years to come.
HOW DO I MAKE THE RIGHT ADVERTISING DECISIONS
In order to make good decisions concerning how to spend your
advertising budget, you must first have a good understanding of
the different types of advertising and promotion available and
what can be expected to be achieved by each.
· You must understand which markets the different media`s can
reach.
· You must understand the demographics of the media`s
consumers.
· You must understand the buying habits of the consumers
reached through the media.
WHAT OFFLINE ADVERTISING & PROMOTION MEDIA`S SHOULD BE CONSIDERED
The media`s that people think of most often are television,
radio, newspaper and magazine advertising. Of course, these are
the big boys that big businesses use regularly.
Other methods of promotion include trade shows, press releases,
direct sales, telemarketing, word of mouth, branding and
billboard advertising.
CONSIDERING THE BIG MEDIA OUTLETS
The big boys of advertising media`s generally cost big bucks.
Given certain circumstances, the big media`s can be bought for
very little money.
Take for example, television, radio and newspapers cost big
bucks during their prime times, but can be bought for pennies on
the dollar during non-primetime hours.
Television primetime is between 7pm and 10pm. Radio primetime is
between 7am and 6pm. With newspapers, the primetime is
Wednesdays and Sundays.
If you intend to hit a media during prime time, get ready to
drop some bucks. Primetime means that you will be able to hit
more consumers during these times. So, in most cases, a
primetime buy will enable you to reach more people with your
advertising.
Non-primetime hours can still deliver a lot of eyes and ears to
your message, and sometimes, these off-hours can be bought for a
bargain basement price.
GETTING MILEAGE FROM EVENTS
Trade shows and press releases are more event-driven. The trade
show is the event, while the press release generally exploits an
event.
Trade shows are an exceptional tool when you deal directly with
potential sellers of your products or services. Other shows are
directed at the consumer, and those can be very valuable avenues
for sales as well.
The press release is aimed towards gaining attention for a
business by distributing newsworthy information about the
business.
Sometimes the appearance of a business at a trade show or other
show can provide the necessary angle for a press release. But
most often, a successful press release will actually require
more noteworthy information than the appearance of a business at
a show.
Yet, even the most mundane of information could be spiced up to
give the real air of importance necessary to get your press
release read and printed.
The great thing about a press release is that might permit you
to get relatively inexpensive promotion on television, radio,
newspapers and magazines; for far less than what it would cost
you to buy advertising in those same outlets.
UTILIZING A SALES TEAM
Depending on what type of business you run and the consumers you
are trying to reach, you might find direct sales and
telemarketing to be very lucrative ways to drive sales to your
business.
Both are very similar in nature. Direct sales can be very
expensive, as it requires a great investment of time to
accomodate. Telemarketing seeks to minimize the time
expenditure, but it often leads to a smaller degree of respect
and attention.
Depending on your product or service --- and always depending
upon the people you employ to the task --- each method will be
more suited to each business on an individual basis.
BRANDING YOUR BUSINESS
I grouped branding and billboard advertising together in my
original list for a reason. I did this because billboard
advertising serves most businesses best by helping to support
the process of branding.
Branding is the process of establishing your business as the
supplier of a certain product or service, or in emphasizing a
certain USP (Unique Selling Proposition) as it pertains to your
business.
If branding and USP seems to be a confusing concept, think about
Wal-Mart and their tag line: "Always Low Prices, Always."
Think about Ford Motors, "Quality is Job One."
Think about the Visa Card, "It`s Everywhere You Want To Be."
You see, these top corporations have managed to make their USP
part of their branding.
Even if you are only competing in a local marketplace, your USP
can and should fit snugly into your branding strategy.
NO MATTER THE MEDIA OR METHOD
Whichever method or media you should choose to employ in your
advertising and promotion, you should become knowledgable about
your market, and the consumers reached by each media. It is
important to understand which consumers can be reached by a
certain media, and in what quantities.
However you choose to spend your advertising dollars, you should
always track the results of your promotional efforts. Failing to
track successes and failures will ultimately lead to the failure
of a business.
When you know whom you are trying to reach and how you think you
might be able to reach them, you will begin to learn how to use
advertising and promotion to make your business successful. That
is a good thing --- after all, that is why you got into the
business in the first place, isn`t it?

The idea for this article came from “My job’s giving me a heart attack!” You can read it here. Whenever this subject comes up, I’m reminded of several things that have happened around me. One almost killed me, and I just realized what happened. For years I worked for a small family-owned manufacturing company. I really liked the President and everything about the business for the first three or four years. Then the President’s son returned from college; he was a really nice fellow and I still like him. But his return changed my relationship with the company. He never did anything unkind to me, but it just seemed he was always looking over my shoulder with some slight disapproval. And everything my wife and I bought, like a home or an automobile, his wife threw up in all of our faces, “Why can’t I have that? We own the place and he (referring to me) is just a worker.”
Then, my own wife (now ex) never stopped wanting more things; I have to say I wanted more as well, but there just wasn’t enough money to do more, and I could not see any way to get more. Meanwhile, the company began to have financial problems. I was the financial officer, so much of the stress fell upon me. When we found a buyer, I thought all my worries were over—they were just beginning. I had to kick myself every morning just to get out of bed.
While all this was going on I became very involved in two community programs that made a difference in people’s lives. All community service groups constantly need money, so add two more stressful situations to my life. Everybody needed more money: business, home, community service groups. Fortunately I had a heart attack; I didn’t die, but it got me out of all the stress, but in a very undignified manner. I ended up with nothing but a new life, free of all the unhealthy conditions I was living in, along with a chance to begin from the very bottom of everything.
I always felt those stressful conditions contributed substantially to my health problem, but I also feel the heart attack may be the luckiest thing that ever happened. Now I’m beginning to find confirmation of this health thinking from recent articles and research into the relation of job stress to poor health.
Which leads to another thing that is in the form of a local advertisement I hear repeated several times daily. It’s a take-off on the saying from the movie “Nine To Five,” “Take this job and shove it.” The local ad is by a Community College seeking students. The ad is based on “Take this job and LOVE it.” Makes me sick! Without getting into an entirely different subject, let me just say all the schools are just turning out expendable bodies to make some corporation money.
It is true that most people must work to live. This will be true until the robots finally begin to do everything, which may not be too far away. When that time arrives, there will be an unsettled period when most people are out of work; after a while, some way will be found to divide the robots’ profits and everyone will have to learn how to play checkers or golf to pass time. Until then, as many as possible should start one or two sideline businesses while they are still working so they can eventually work for themselves or at least not starve to death if they are fired.
Those who don’t want to work for themselves, or can’t make it on their own, should take the attitude described in Die Broke, available from Amazon. This book advocates the idea of quitting your job, even the first one, as soon as you begin to work. The quitting is in your mind, meaning you should at once begin to look for a better job. When you find one that suits, at a higher salary, of course, you should actually quit your present job and take the better one. As soon as you begin the new job, quit in your mind and repeat the process. The point of this idea is to improve your financial position continuously so eventually you can do whatever you want, spend every last cent, and die broke when you sense the end is near. I totally recommend this approach, if you must work for someone else. The better way is self-employment.
Now, where is the proof for all this about stress at work killing people, other than my own example? We can begin by looking at the blog of Dr. Helen Smith, the subject of the original article that caught my attention. She is a forensic psychologist who solved her particular health problems, several heart attacks while very young, only 37, by working from her home rather than at a workplace. Some of the comments related to her blog show that workers in a wide range of fields suffer from a number of stress-related conditions, such as:
* One worked for a large law firm for six years and felt that stress constantly washed over him, like a river. He quit to enter a PhD program.
* IT workers seem to be under a lot of stress. One comment expressed willingness to change jobs frequently when the work structure began to be stressful; this is a great strategy, but not available to many jobs.
* A biotech worker was told they had no choice but to accept a lot more work and responsibility with no additional pay; they simply quit and began their own small profitable photography business.
* Another stressed employee did the ultimate; they retired early!
From About.com come these findings from various surveys quoted in the British Medical Journal:
* High stress levels increase a person’s chance of developing metabolic syndrome.
* Presence of this syndrome increases the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
This article, “Is Your Job Heartbreaking?”, from Workplace Health, is based on a large study by the Belgian Stress Project. This research found some results not considered by the conventional medical community which focuses on classic risk factors for heart problems like cholesterol levels. The report developed some questions a worker should ask about taking a new job or staying at their present work:
* Do you have the opportunity to develop new skills?
* Are you allowed to organize your own work?
* Do you have enough authority to make decisions?
* Can your coworkers and bosses make you happy more than making you want to hit something?
Some more proof of job stress is in the comments to this blog by Linkedin Answers:
* One comment related to an abusive management environment. Workers who quit took as much as nine months to recover completely. These people suffered dental problems, alcohol abuse, acid-reflux, and inability to relax because of a constant feeling of impending doom.
* Two comments address the ability of your boss to control your health and your life. One said “your boss is 80% of your life!” The other used the often quoted government finding that most heart attacks occur around 9:00 AM on Monday morning. (My comment: It’s tough to go where you hate to be).
* One comment mentions a condition at his company that he called “Rectal Cranial Inversion.” Go figure. Whatever it was caused gout, edema, and use of a cane for awhile. After leaving that job he worked for AOL enduring constant layoff rumors. He had a heart attack on Monday and was back at work on Friday.
* Another writer listed 14 health-related problems people her work group experienced. A few are anxiety attacks, nausea, vomiting, can’t sleep, headaches, and loss of libido (this one would make me quit immediately!).
In “How Does Stress Affect Health?” the author lists ways stress becomes a health problem. Here are a few of these:
* Depression often results from continued stress.
* The author says stress can cause hair loss, especially if it causes a person to literally pull out their hair.
* Obsessive compulsive behavior disorder can result from too much stress.
* Stress often results in obesity, because eating seems to relieve stress symptoms in some people.
* Of course, heart disease is on the list as well.
This should be enough proof that stress in the workplace is detrimental to the health of many employees. When you read through all the blogs and attached comments, you will find a substantial number of people who believe workers should modify their own behavior in order to endure work conflicts with bosses and coworkers. No doubt this can work, but at what cost? You’ve already given at least half your life, most of your family relationships, as well as your health to the company. Are you now supposed to give your soul as well?
The better way to do this would seem to be getting along with all your employment problems until you can find something better. People fear change and they don’t like all the work required to find a new job. Aren’t your health and family worth a little effort to improve the future for everyone?
The perfect solution is to do as I did or as the subject of the original heart article in this discussion did. Work for yourself or telecommute. This may not be available to everyone, but the Internet has improved the possibilities. You should at least look into the possibility of doing this.
So, what are the most stressful occupations? While researching this I concluded there are probably as many different lists as there are groups making the surveys. It’s sort of like statistical analysis. You can prove anything you want if you set the right parameters. Just for your information here is one such list from Health Magazine:
Top 10 Most Stressful Jobs
1. Inner City HS Teacher
2. Police Officer
3. Miner
4. Air Traffic Controller
5. Medical Intern
6. Stockbroker
7. Journalist
8. Customer Service/Complaint Worker
9. Secretary
10. Waiter
One final thought worth considering is what about those who survive a layoff? They are really fortunate, don’t you think? Maybe not. Read “Keeping your job may damage your health.” The author says many layoff survivors suffer from what he calls “layoff-survivor sickness.” If a company fails to recognize this problem and does not help the survivors, there is likely to be a significant loss in productivity and resulting low morale.
And my final shot for self-employment is this miscellaneous poll I found from January 2, 2007:
Would you like to work from home?
Yes 77%
No 23%
End of story.

5 Ways To Accelerate Your Earnings
During An Economic Slowdown
By Derek Gehl
These days, the TV news shows are full of them...
"Doom and gloom" stories about the current economic slowdown, sparked by the mortgage mess in the U.S.
Now, I don't mean to make light of a serious situation. I know that a lot of very big companies have been caught with their pants down, so to speak.
And I know that many good, honest folk have lost a lot of money -- or even their jobs -- as a result of the current crisis, through absolutely no fault of their own.
But that DOESN'T mean you should hide your head in the sand and wait for "the good times to roll" again before you embark on a new business venture!
The truth is, NOW is the best time to grow your business!
Businesses that are launched in hard times are better equipped to survive than the ones that grow bloated and fat during times of surplus spending.
But in order to thrive during an economic slowdown, you need to know how to do things the smart way, and not waste money you don't have on strategies that won't work.
Today I'd like to share with you 5 cheap and easy ways to grow your business.
By implementing these strategies, you'll be able to acquire new leads, strengthen your relationship with existing customers, AND add new streams of income to your business.
... And all that mean MORE money in your bank account!
Without further ado, here they are:
Business Turbo-charger #1:
Generate passive income with a niche site
If you're looking for an extra source of income, this one's for you!
A niche-centered Internet business is the best way to profit from a downturn... Because the cost of entry is lower than any other business and the upside is enormous.
On top of that, an Internet business is very forgiving. You never have to "bet the farm" on an Internet idea. If something isn't working, you'll find out right away and you can either fix it or move on to something better.
(Just be sure to take the time and do the necessary research to prove the niche is actually a profitable one!)
Business Turbo-charger #2:
Join affiliate programs that align with your
current business model
This is the fastest and easiest way to add a new stream of income to your business, guaranteed.
Your existing customers are three times as likely to buy something from you as a stranger who has no experience with your products. So how do you get these people to buy from you again if you only have one product?
Simple -- you offer them an affiliate product!
All you need to do is conduct some research into your market and discover what products your audience is clamoring for (beyond the ones you already provide them).
Next you need to find an affiliate program that offers such products, and add them to the "back end" of your site.
... Then simply email your list special offers for these products -- and mention them on your site, in your newsletter, and your blog... and watch the extra orders come rushing in!
Business Turbo-charger #3:
Start a blog to strengthen your relationship with
your customers
In turbulent times, the cream rises to the top.
... In other words, the ones who are truly successful will go the extra mile to build a strong relationship with their customers and prove that they're a rock-solid business that always has their customers' best interests in mind.
And starting a blog is a GREAT way to do this!
A blog helps you personalize your business, and allows your customers to get a glimpse of the people behind the website. This goes a LONG way to reassuring wary online shoppers that you're someone they want to do business with!
Not only that... search engines absolutely LOVE the fresh and frequently updated content of a blog -- which means you'll get a great boost in the search engine rankings and drive more qualified visitors to your site!
Business Turbo-charger #4:
Widen your circle of potential partners by joining
a social business network
If you're searching for new income opportunities, a great place to look is a popular social business networking site, such as LinkedIn.
LinkedIn has more than 19 million registered members -- all of whom are professional business people who are interested in meeting other people whose business interests are similar to their own.
... When it comes to looking for joint venture opportunities, new business partners, or people who are looking to buy your product or hire your services, LinkedIn is a virtual gold mine!
(Plus, it's a great place to get professional feedback and free business advice!)
Business Turbo-charger #5:
Write helpful articles to boost your reputation
and credibility
A great way to spread word about your business and boost your reputation as an "industry expert" is to write free articles on topics related to your industry and then submit them to the 'Net's top article directories.
The benefits of doing this are twofold...
1) Your audience will become more familiar with your name, and will be far more likely to buy your products
2) The links you'll get from the article directories pointing back to your site will give you a nice boost in your search engine rankings.
... The bottom line is, every little thing counts. In times like this, you have to do what you can to separate yourself from the pack and make yourself stand out from your competitors.
And you have to keep your eyes open for every opportunity to add a new stream of income to your business.
That's ESPECIALLY important during an economic slowdown -- because even if one of your income streams dries up, your business will continue to thrive.
With an Internet business, you never have to get locked into a losing proposition.
As long as you build your business on a solid niche, and are always looking for ways to diversify your income streams, you'll always be able to keep your head afloat... even when others around you are drowning.
So keep your chin up -- and don't give up on your dreams!
Remember, optimism is the best antidote to any downturn.
To your success,
Derek Gehl

It is unbelievable that the year is progressing so fast and the goals you had set may be fading into background as demands of life increase. It is important that you treat each month as if you are starting anew with all the energy, excitement and enthusiasm to keep the momentum throughout the year.
Now that we are in the third month of the year, it is the perfect time to review your goals with your mentor to ensure that you are making progress. The importance of sharing your goals is that it expands your awareness of your vision beyond your capability and it gives you something to live up to. In life, it is natural to reach the bar, no matter how high or low it is set. It is your responsibility to set your own limit according to your expectation.
How high is your limit or bar? To reach your limit, you must create a vision that excites you and always have a mentor to put fuel into your tank to reach the goal.
Keep your belief and focus no matter what obstacles come in your way. Speed humps of life will always be there, treat them as challenges, not as "mountains" then you will achieve your your vision.
To succeed in life, you must learn to be teachable and follow those who have succeeded in life. I have a mentor who is willing to help those who want to be financially independent and have time for the family. Here is her Blue print statement...
